Hey Mitchel!

well, followed your tutorial to a tee, I thought.

backed up site and database.

downloaded new 4.8.2

extracted, then made all adjustments to web.config

uploaded new files to server

ran Install/Install.aspx

well, you can see...

http://www.wbzx.com/dnn/Install/Install.aspx

any ideas?

it tried to run and it failed on numerous items, unfortuanltey the page went away and was left with what you see there. from a glance, it looked like schema problems

I copied everything over from my old web config file to the letter.

I'm sorry that I didn't see this before you had restored your site.

From the sounds of it I would ensure that your proper connection string is updated and uncommented!

No problem -

I tried again using the update version 4.8.2.

I got a little farther

the error I get now is

Could not allocate space for object 'HostSettings' in database 'db1396' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full.

Im pretty certain connection strings are set ok.

any idea on this new error?

you can see it here

http://www.wbzx.com/dnn/Default.aspx

when I run Install/install.aspx

I get application error. I will have to turn off custom errors to see the stack trace

This error is due to your SQL Server database being out of space....you will want to check with your hosting provider on this one.

it is possible that you have SQL Server table bloat in the SiteLog and/or EventLog tables, but you would need to directly connect to SQL Server to clear records and save space.

ok - thanks I will check on that.

for some reason I cannot turn off the custom error message to see the real error

I set

customErrors mode="Off"

in the web.config file - but it still just gives me what is there now.

If you have CustomErrors mode="Off" specified and still get the general error. One of two things has happened.

You have a format error in your web.config file

or

You have an error in the .NET version that is being used on your site.

well, this site was running 4.6.2 just fine so Im guessing it isnt the .NET?

so I guess that leaves the web.config - that Ive checked up and down and I dont know where the error is. connection string are set in both places - machine keys are set as well.

I have access to the database tables. can I empty the siteLog and eventLog tables without concern? the SiteLog has over 20,000 entries.

That would get you the space needed....Just make sure that you don't need the site log for reporting, most people don't though.

If you are not using the site log, I would also recommend turning it off.

Well, I emptied and cleaned my database up, but still no luck. I really don't understand why upgrading this product is so difficult. must be why my hosting company doesnt do it. I consider myself to be a pretty smart guy and I have looked over that web.config file a hundred times and this thing is just making me look silly.

I was extremely careful when editing the web.config and the site runs fine under 4.6.2 (if the .NET version was fine in 4.6.2, it should be ok for 4.8.2 right?)

I really appricate your insight and time. You are a great asset to the DNN community.

It looks like you are back up and running? Did you get the upgrade to work.

If not, drop me an e-mail and I'll see if there is anything I can do there that might help you a bit more....it shouldn't be this complicated, but it can be at times due to the large number of moving parts...
