After following your excellent tutorial on installing DNN to a remote host, I'm making progress, but not quite there yet.

My first problem was getting my host to set the proper permissions. Resolved

Next I had the problem of Install/Install.aspx not running and returning the UnderConstruction.htm page. Thanks to your suggestion, that is Resolved.

Then I had the problem documented here with the PortalAlias table. Again, thanks to your suggestion, that is Resolved.

Now, when I try to run Default.aspx, the browser seems to just hang. It is not frozen and I receive no error messages at all, it just seem to be continually downloading data to the browser, but nothing happens. The connect lights in the task bar stay on and there is constant activity on my cable modem, but nothing displays! I can stop the page load and load a different website, but if I go back to my DNN site, I get the same symptoms. AutoUpdate is set to False.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but the site is hosted as a sub-domain of my primary account.

Thanks for all your help,
Ed

Ed,

A few things.

1.) If you manually go back to /install/install.aspx does it give you any message?
2.) How long have you waited, I have seen on some remote hosts the first page load after install taking over 1 minute to load
3.) Which host are you using?

Mitchel,

1. Manual load of Install/Install.aspx clears the browser window, says done in the status box and there are no error messages.
2. I have waited several minutes, but didn't time it. Easily more than one minute though. Should I just let it go and see what happens?
3. The host is Lunarpages.com. and this DNN install is on a sub-domain. I have another .Net 2.0 site running on the primary domain with no problems.

Thanks again,
Ed

Ed,

The only thing I can think of is to validate that the proper domain alias is stored in the database, potentially the site is trying to do an endless redirect loop...

Mitchel,

I had to modify the PortalAlias table to remove "install" in an earlier problem. I left the "/" following the domain and thought that might be causing it to fail. I removed the "/", but it still hangs. (loops?)

The HTTPAlias field now looks like this: www.dotnet.renegadesprints.org

Should it have the trailing "/" or does it matter. I've tried both ways but want to leave it in the proper configuration.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

Are you sure that the www portion is supposed to be there? Typically with a sub-domain you don't have the www.

Michael Kizer responded to my post on your Blog with the following:

Thanks Ed. I was able to resolve the issue with a combination of editing the PortalAlias table entry and forcing my way into the site via www.domain.com/default.aspx?tabid=36

That last trick allowed me to get in and update the portal alias list in the settings.

That worked for me as well and at least now I can get to the main page. We'll see what happens next!

Thank you both for the help on this matter.
Ed

I tried it both ways with the same result, but the suggestion by Michael seems to have resolved the issue. When I set up the sub-domain, I checked the option to use www, so I guess that is why it works.

Thanks,
Ed

Ed,

No problem, it sounds like more than anything the application needed to be re-started for the change to fully take effect.

Hopefully you are all set to go now!

While I've got you here, I've got one other question.

Lunarpages tried to tell me their servers would not run DNN4.7 because they did not have the AJAX 1.0 framework. Will that cause any problems? I thought AJAX functunality was built into the application or it was designed to detect if the service was running. Am I correct that this will not be an issue if the server does not have AJAX installed?

Ed

Ed,

DNN is designed to detect if the assemblies are there, you shouldn't have any problems.

However, in most cases I have noticed that the DNN included assemblies are enough for it to work.
