I figured out the problem.  My Global.asax file was renamed to bakGlobal.asax.  this name change didn't show in the modified date when I checked when the last time all the files were modified.  Once I renamed the file back to Global.asax, the site was back up.  All is well in the universe....Happy New Year!!!

That is a very interesting issue, I would be sure you know why and how that name was changed, as that could cause you future problems if it happens again!
