Hi - Is there a tutorial or directions for taking a backup of a child portal site, and then restoring it to the same DNN installation - only as a parent portal? I need to set the child portal with it's own unique domain name and want to separate it out into it's own parent portal. Thank you.

If you still want them on the same installation you do not need to do anything special, no backups or restores needed. Just add an HTTP Alias to the site for the full domain. Now if you are looking at separating it from other installations, that is a bit more involved.
