I read your blog about this topic, and it looks like your blog is for setting up a NEW DNN site...

What additional steps and procedures are involved for moving dev to production??

Specifically with the various database tables?? Ftp'ing the aspx and skins and whatnot is very easy...

This looks like a procedure for setting up a new DNN site...what about moving an already-created DNN site, with skins, content, all kinds of stuff in it, to a hosting provider??

I've been told that I should request my hoster to set permissions etc., and that the DB should be set up in advance and that the tables have to be ftp'd to to the hoster, etc. etc.

Would you please clarify??

Thank you, Tom

Tom,

Thank you for moving this from the blog!

Basically if you have an existing site you have the following.

1.) Add a portal alias for the production URL
2.) Backup the database file
3.) Upload the backup of the database to your hosting provider and have them restore it
4.) While they are restoring the backup, have them check the ASP.NET permissions as directed in my article
5.) Upload your DNN files to the proper location on the hosting provider
6.) Update the web.config file on the production site to reflect the restored database and the proper username/password for that database

That should do it.

I will work to get a detailed guide published on my blog here in the next few days.

Thank you for responding....These two steps could be fleshed out more.

Which database file(s)?? Does one pre-create the database?? What  kind of backup??

I have something which tells what the specific SQL permissions have to be for the SQL user ID, I will post that later this morning.

Thank you, Tom

A long time ago I received an excellent step by step explanation of how to set up DNN with SQL 2005 on localhost.

It explains about setting up a login to the database with one's desired UID/PWD with SQL server authentication.

The instructions included these database permissions:

Security, create a new user with the same name as the UID:

Default schema: dbo

Schemas owned by the UID: db_ddladmin, db_owner, db_securityadmin

Database role membership: db_securityadmin, db_ddladmin, db_datawriter

If pictures would help I can send those...

HTH Tom

One more suggestion: Clarify the trust settings aspect -- must it be full, medium, what??
This is not obvious to most people and even the first-level hosting support may not comprehend this concept.
Thank you, Tom

Thank you for your quick turnaround, I think it will help a lot of people. Hopefully a lot of people will read and comment.
If you are up to it, a postscript about backup, maintenance, etc. methods may also be helpful.

I hope so as well! I'm putting the finishing touches on it now, I hope to post it within the next 2-3 hours.

I have a feeling that it will become just about as popular as my install guides.
