New Module Coming Soon - Categorized Documents

I thought I would make this post to announce the next new free module that will be provided by MitchelSellers.com and IowaComputerGurus Inc.  Categorized Documents will be a basic document management module that will allow you to quickly and easily display documents listings to your users.  This module will include the following features.

  • Fully template driven display
  • Ability to have file icons based on file extension
  • All files displayed at once, category by category
  • Anyone can be given edit permissons, no messing with DNN folder permissions to get it working
  • Administration interface to add additional file icons
  • Ability to track download counts (external to DNN Link Click, to allow for future reporting)
  • Ability to publish a document on a future date

Future versions of this module will allow for advanced permissons and other settings  The inital public version of this module is scheduled to be released 4/15/2008.  If you have any comments or suggestions on this module please feel free to share them below!

Sounds great Mitchel! I've been thinking of such a module myself!
1) Secure file system, so someone can't just enter the url to download the document, they have to login and request the document from the module.
2) Role Security on the categories
3) Show a "new" image next to documents updated in the past X days
4) Auto Synchronizing with file-system. It would be nice to FTP a file to a folder that stores the files for category X, and it automatically appears in the module. This would be a BIG time saver.
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,

Great recommendations and almost all of them will be on the roadmap.

I actually just released verision 1.0 of the module today. I will update and publish an actual roadmap soon!

Would be great to be able to download a document without redirecting to this kind of repository. Will this be possible (to have a permalink which download the document directly and also count the downloading) ???

You can permalink to the current links in the module. I can put a setting in the edit page that shows the permalink value if that would help.

Perfect. Yes, to my opinion that would help.

But I am not sure that I have correctly understood. Does it mean that I can hyperlink to a document in another module ? In a Text/HTML module, could I put a link which enable the download of the document, without redirecting to the document module and does it take into account the counting ???

yes, you are 100% correct.

When I get back into the country I will write a blog about it and add in a display of the perma link on the edit page.

I've been thinking a nice document management feature would be to set permissions based on roles or users in one document repository. I find that happens pretty often where webmasters want everyone to make their own accounts and have them see 'their files'

That is something in my mind as a roadmap item....but I'm still trying to work out the "best" way to do it..
